Institution Profile - Bauer Media Group
The publishing company which I am gong to focus on is Bauer Media Group. Bauer is the largest publishing group in Europe - who are privately owned. Bauer publish across many countries within Europe, and does also publish out in America & Mexico. The company was founded in 1875 by German Johann Bauer, and has grown ever since, as it now produces over 280 magazines in 15 countries. As a result Bauer turns over a staggering €1.8 billion. Bauer publishes many magazines such as Bella, Take a Break, TV Choice, in addition a number of puzzle magazines. However, the main reason why I have chosen Bauer is because they produce Mojo, Kerrang, but mainly Q. Q magazine is the main inspiration for my magazine, along with NME. However, I prefer Q magazine because the style they produce is alot more simplistic compare to NME - which is the main reason why I am choosing Bauer. NME is produce by International Publishing Company. Bauer Media Group also have a 50% share in Box Television, co-owned by Channel 4. Box Television produce various TV music channels such as; Q TV, 4Music, Kerrang TV, The Box, and Smash Hits TV. In addition Bauer also owns various radio stations through Bauer Radio. This company owns stations such as Magic, Kiss, Kerrang, Heart & Q etc.

Golden Spiral - Front Cover
I have used which is what i feel is my best mock up to demonstrate the rule of the golden spiral. The golden spiral is when there is something in the photo leading the reader's eye towards the centre of the photograph. In the case of my front cover and the image I am using, I feel that the way the light is shining onto the speaker, it focuses the reader's eye directly to it, then as the light progresses up the photo (as it gets darker) it leads the reader's eye towards the centre of photo, which is the guitar and the models t'shirt. This is the same in other photos used in my mock ups, this is especially the case with the ones used in my contents pages. This is demonstrated in the cropped photo off of my contents page below, where the spiral follows down the neck of the guitar towards the lighter part of the photo - model's neck.

Sample of Test Shots
Below is a sample of the 210 photos taken during my recent photo shoot. Using these I will choose the best three, which will be incorporated into my magazine (front cover, contents page, and the double page spread). I have posted the original photos so that we can compare the final photos after I have edited it through photoshop, to enable me to get the best pictures for my magazine. The photos were taken in a darkened room, with only one spot light, and one controllable spot light. They were taken in front of a projector screen, with my model sitting either on a speaker, or a chair. The model was asked to dress in black and white clothing to create the best effect, as I wanted to create a black & white photo - my colour palette is black, grey & white. The model was supplied with a guitar to coincide with the theme of the magazine.

Unique Selling Point
As I identified during the beginning of my task, I realised that to separate my magazine from competitors I would have to create a USP (Unique Selling Point) for my publication, this is to entice customers into purchasing the magazine. Below is an example of two magazines, both of which our inspiration for my magazine, I have circled the unique selling points for the magazines.
So what I have taken from this is that, I will include similar features on my front cover, these will incorporate features such as free Cd's from a certain Indie band such as Kasabian. I will also include a feature containing an interview with the lead singer of a band such as Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner. To make this interesting it will be about a private incident or recent event which happened in his life.

Magazine Title Styles
Here is a list of six font styles which I chose off of DaFont website, these are fonts which I feel would be good for the style of magazine I am producing. However, from asking peers, I have chose the third style down, this is called 'Lobster'. The reason why people chose this font is because they feel it will tie in best with the simplistic style of magazine I am producing, they felt that other options had too much 'background'/smudges, and felt it would suit the style of magazine I am hoping to produce.
Colour Scheme
The above picture is a colour palette showing all the different colours which could be used together for the colour scheme of a magazine. My instinct was to go with a style which would portray a sense of style to the potential customers – my target audience. I also wanted the colour scheme to not clash, and help emphasise the fact I am trying to go to an opposite look to NME (which has a busy, lively front page). So I have chosen to go with colour palette, number two (black, grey, white). The reason being is that I felt it would underline my intentions to give the magazine a classy edge. To coincide with the colour scheme, I have also decided that I will be shooting my photos in black & white style, as I feel this would correspond well with the colour palette I have chosen. How I will use the colours is that I will having a silver/grey background, which will be emphasised by the black and white image I will be using. In addition to this I will be using white or black for my title (depending upon the sharpness of the photo), However, whichever colour I use for my masthead, I will be using the opposite colour for cover lines etc.
Magazine Name - Amplified
One of my first tasks to perform upon the creation of a magazine was to think of a magazine name that would represent my magazine, and what sort of magazine it was. However, I also felt it would be vital for the magazine name to be short & ’snappy’ so that it would be memorable to the audience. This was a result of researching various music magazines, and looking into detail about the magazines for which mine was the inspiration of, NME & Q. As it is plain to see from these two magazines, both are short names, which has been identified as that it stays in the mind of the customer, if they have a short name e.g. NME stands for New Musical Express.
However, the problem occurred to me that many magazine names are already in use in various different countries around the world, the magazine name obviously has to be unique. So I felt I would go for a name which was still associated with music, especially the genre, but represented what happens during many concerts. So I chose ‘Amplified’. This is mainly down to the fact that I thought it represents the louder music of the music industry (as my magazine focuses on Indie), but I also feel that it represents the meaning of making something louder, not only through music, but in addition through message.
Who is my magazine aimed at?
Gender | Male |
Age | 16 – 25 |
Current reads | Music Magazines; Q, NME |
Intelligence | Intellectual person, who has a wide range of knowledge about music, specifically the indie genre |
Preferred music (bands) | Wide range from the Indie genre from, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Kasabian, Elbow, The White Stripes etc. |

Pitch Feedback
From the feedback I received from my magazine pitch, I have identified the positives and the negatives which my fellow peers feel about my magazine idea. One advantage I feel with my peers evaluating my magazine, is that this is my target audience, and they will give me a good insight into what they would want out of the magazine. However, fellow bloggers revealed that they like the name of the magazine, as they feel it ties in well with the style (colour scheme etc), and the genre of the magazine I am looking to produce. Another feature I identified was that they feel the target age for my magazine is the correct one, as they feel it tends to be the later teenage years who read indie/alt rock magazines in the style which I am doing. However, there were a few people who alerted me to the fact I have no Unique Selling Point, which is something I need to rectify asap, otherwise I may fall behind other competitors.
